10 Most Frequently Stolen Vehicles



With new vehicle technology comes new methods for theives to steal cars.

And while anti-theft technology has helped vehicle thefts trend downward since they last peaked at 1.6 million in 1991, the risk of having your car stolen is still prevalent.

According to a report from the Des Plaines, Ill.-based National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), vehicle thefts fell 58% to 699,594 in 2013 ― the most recent data year available. NICB warns, however, that this doesn't mean car owners shouldn't worry about auto theft. Today's thieves are privvy to acquiring smart keys, switching vehicle identification numbers, and using stolen identities to secure loans for expensive vehicles.

Among the data in its report, NICB lists the top 10 most frequently stolen vehicles in 2014 ― owners of these vehicles will want to make sure they keep them safe:

1. Honda Accord
Number stolen in 2014: 51,290 thefts

The National Insurance Crime Bureau reports the Honda Accord was the most frequently stolen passenger vehicle in 2014, with 51,290 thefts among all model years of this car. NICB notes that older Honda Accords and Civics account for most of these thefts; newer Hondas are rarely stolen because of improved antitheft technology.

2. Honda Civic

Number stolen in 2014: 43,936.

3. Ford Pickup
Number stolen in 2014: 28,680 thefts.

4. Chevrolet Pickup (full size)
Number stolen in 2014: 23,196.

5. Toyota Camry
Number stolen in 2014: 14,605.

6. Dodge Pickup (full size)
Number stolen in 2014: 11,075.

7. Dodge Caravan
Number stolen in 2014: 10,483.

8. Nissan Altima
Number stolen in 2014: 9,109.

9. Acura Integra
Number stolen in 2014: 6,902.

10. Nissan Maxima
Number stolen in 2014: 6,586.
